Looks like the the Hollywood sign and land is for sale by the investment company that bought it from Howard Hughes.  The property was purchased back in 2002 from Howard Hughes' estate for $1.7 million and is now for sale for $22 million.

I just assumed that the property was state owned, along with just about everyone else, but it appears that we were wrong.  What's interesting is that the sign was originally placed there by a real estate developer as an advertisement back in the 1940's.

I'd hate to see the sign go, Hollywood just wouldn't be Hollywood without the sign.
